Websites on generalized anxiety disorder?
Posted by: | CommentsI'm working on a paper about generalized anxiety disorder for a graduate school level class and I need regular internet sources. Every one I've looked at talks about the same thing…symptoms, causes, etc. Does anyone know of any sites that have personal stories of people with generalized anxiety disorder, websites that offer family support, etc? Just something different than symptoms, causes, treatments…Thanks!
Sure, here you go:

This is the only one I can remember off hand, so I'll give you a couple more when I'm out of the office.
Help with general anxiety disorder?
Posted by: | CommentsI have a loved one whom i believe may have General anxiety disorder. What are some of the main symptoms and what can i do to help? What kind of treatment is available?
I suffer from GAD myself and have done so my entire life. It is now completely controlled and I live a normal life (if you can call anyone's life "normal"). Often, the affected person will have panic attacks or feel panicked when there's no apparent reason or cause. For example, I had one of my first panic attacks while watching a boring infomercial. This can make the person fear that they're having a heart attack or other physical problem. Many other physical symptoms occur like loss of sleep and achy muscles. I had tons of symptoms, most of which were the result of lack of sleep and being tensed up all the time. Sometimes, you wonder if you're going to lose control. You can also develop agorophobia (fear of public places) simply because you are afraid of panicing in front of others. A person suffering from GAD probably feels horribly alone and misunderstood. They get told by well-meaning friends to "just relax" when it is actually almost physically impossible for them to do so. This person needs your support. There is no shame in getting help. This is not their fault, although they probably feel like they are being weak and they are embarrassed. Offer to go with them to the doctor. Be there to listen to them. I wish so bad that someone had understood what I was going through instead of treating me like I was being silly and overreacting to things. There are lots of treatments available which usually include a combination of psychotherapy and medications. I did not want to do the meds because they can make you feel dizzy at first (a common symptom during a panic attack and one which scared me at the time) but I finally agreed and am just fine. No side effects. No personality change. I still have emotions but they are normal reactions like anyone else would have. Thank you for wanting to help this person. You have no idea how much this alone will help them.
Help …I have a sleeping disorder ?
Posted by: | CommentsI suffer from "Anxiety"…"Diabetes"….'Low blood pressure'….I was Depressed …but I got a relief from that…Now I have to use a sleeping tablet to get a good night rest….and I am nervous ….."Help me please"…What can I do?
that's hard to deal with all those things! I'm sorry! Anyways, sleep medication can cause people to form a strong dependence on them, making it very hard to stop using them. I would consult your doctor, and see if they can help lower you anxiety with something in hopes that this helps you fall asleep better. Anxiety is a number 1 cause for sleep deprivation. If this isn't possible, then I would see if your doctor can give you a sleep pill that has a low risk for dependency. Overall, the best thing to do is to seek professional help. Talk to someone! Getting a good nights rest is very important and believe it or not there are countless numbers of people who are having the same problem you are. best of luck!
Unsure if i am experiencing some sort of panic attack???
Posted by: | CommentsI am unsure if i have been experiencing some sort of panic attack. It has happened 3 times in a year. My face, neck and chest goes bright red, i get a hot/cold feeling, i start feeling dizzy and i feel like i need to throw up. These episodes last about half an hour but it takes me at least an hour or two to calm down. I have Narcolepsy and anxiety and i am under treatment for both. Does anyone know what could be causing this?
Sounds like it could be a panick attack. If you already have anxiety problems it doesnt really take much to bring one on. Tell you doctor about the panick attacks and they may be able to give you something that you can take on an as needed basis when you feel one coming on like xanax or something.
Paxil has to many side effects. Any others that don’t have sexual side effects.
Negative emotions (like sadness, stress, anger, etc.) causes your Serotonin production to be low; when your Serotonin level is low, you are more prone to getting Anxiety, Panic Attacks, Depression, etc.
Medication like Antidepressants (SSRI - Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) helps to boost Serotonin level.
But there are natural ways to do it without medication. There’s this strange herb called “St John’s Wort” - it is said to be more effective than Prozac. No, it is not for mild depression only and ignore those sayings. In fact, it does help anxiety and panic-attacks as St John’s Wort works like prozac. Other natural ways will be exercise, diet, more exposure to light, etc.
The problem is that, even if your Serotonin is balanced… you have that “learned behavior” in your mind. You need to break that initial cycle to destroy that learned behavior - Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) does this. A technique that you can use without CBT will be Distraction… There are several other techniques to help cope them!
Ok, to use Distraction: Firstly, try to….

Where should I go to check if I have anxiety disorder?
Posted by: | CommentsI am not sure if I have anxiety disorder or depression. Should I go to a psychiatrist, or a general doctor, or counselor or who?
I would go to your regular Dr. first and then he or she can refer you to the appropriate specialist if need be, or just give you some medication right then.
Social Anxiety Treatment?
Posted by: | CommentsI have recently taken several on line tests from which i have found out that i may have social anxiety disorder. I have no insurance, or doctor that i can go to. What would you recommend for me to do in order to get examined and if diagnosed to get some treatment? I live in Illinois close to Chicago. I would greatly appreciate your advice.
Why not treat it with a combination of vitamins, exercise and possibly some calming herbal supplements?
While for the vitamins, going to a good doctor would be helpful as they can do a blood test and determine if you have any vitamin deficiencies or any other underlying causes of how you're feeling (such as an underactive thyroid, hormonal imbalance or a lack of certain amino acids) you might want to start by taking some good multi-vitamins.
If you’re not exercising regularly, beginning a regular program of exercise is another way you can combat anxiety. Evidence suggests that exercise postively affects the levels of certain mood-enhancing neurotransmitters in the brain. Exercise may also boost feel-good endorphins, release tension in muscles, help you sleep better and reduce levels of the stress hormone cortisol. It also increases body temperature, which may have calming effects. All of these changes in your mind and body can improve such symptoms as sadness, anxiety, irritability, stress, fatigue, anger, self-doubt and hopelessness.
And finally, here are some herbal supplements that may help you (herbs are available at the corner drug store and at health food stores):
Kava (Piper methysticum) is a member of the pepper family that has been cultivated by Pacific Islanders for over 3000 years for use as a social and ceremonial drink. The first description of kava came to the west with Captain James Cook, who traveled through the South Seas in a number of celebrated voyages. To this day, when village elders or others in the Pacific Islands come together for a significant meeting, they begin with an elaborate kava ceremony. Currently, kava is used in Europe and increasingly in the United States to treat stress, anxiety, and insomnia.
Valerian: Nature's valium. Another favorite for the treatment of anxiety is valerian. Derived from the dried rhizomes and roots of this tall plant, which grows in wet soil in many countries, valerian has been used for thousands of years as a folk remedy. As a natural relaxant, it is useful for several disorders including restlessness, nervousness, insomnia, menstural problems, and "nervous" stomach. Valerian acts on the brain's GABA receptors to produce a tranquilizing action that is similar to Valium-type drugs, but without the same side effects.

Prozac makes you feel better by disabling those crippling doubts and inhibitions, but it often does so at the expense of your better judgment. You stop over-analyzing, but you also stop thinking things through.
