What methods/treatment for anxiety actually work?
Posted by: | CommentsI have heard of hypnosis (I don't really want to waste my $ on that), then there is therapy/counseling (of course). Have you heard of any methods that work?
Therapy (CBT based) has been scientifically shown to be effective in most cases. There are also many medications that can help take an edge off while you are going through therapy. Talk to your primary care doctor, and ask for a referal to a psychologist.
Im moving to NYC, hopefully this summer.. and i will be able to take one kind of therapy for my SAD. I have been waiiiting to get popper treatment for a long time.. as i have avoided all medications.. and have dealt with some very insensitive "psychiatrists". This will be my first time living, going to school.. and possibly working int he city on my own.. and i just want the therapy to be as a good as posible.. I was thinking CBT.. but i dont know exactly where the best place is to go.
I need some good recommendations (and dont worry about price.. because my insurance in ny will cover it)
I really need some help.. in order to function and continue in school.. and I believe this will help with my deppression..
I just need to know which therapy .. which location or which therapist is best to see. I have been waiting for this opportunity.. and this time.. i want to go someplace that understands this disorder inside and out.. and will help me by pushing me to make changes.. and assess whats going on.. i need a good coach, because otherwise i may be a shut in forever.
Thank you
Personally meds helped me the most but some people do well with CBT. But most concepts from CBT can be developed with a good book on your own, while medication keeps the symptoms back.
I recommend: Anxiety, Phobias and Panic by R. Peurifoy. It's based on CBT.

Day 3 of my blog, I'd love your help with my book, I need some of your experiences with SA so other people can relate to you and get something from your sharing. I need about 600-800 words, there's no right or wrong, just type from the heart, share how long you've had SA, how you found out, how you feel etc. Thanks, Steve …

Question about anxiety disorder?
Posted by: | CommentsI have been dealing with this problem for 7 years now. I have had two or three MRI, been to a neurologist several times, and nothing has shown up. I have live with constant dizzyness, not the spinning dizziness, but feeling off balance, as if walking on a boat. I am taking lexapro, for one week, but so far, no relief. Anyone else ever experinced something like this with anxiety? is it a normal reaction?
Have your sugar level checked up, your cholesterol as well as your BP.
I need help with my Social Anxiety Disorder?
Posted by: | CommentsShould I go see a psychiatrist? or a psychologist?
I am not really interested in meds, but in therapy…
What should I do?
Been there, and can say that for one, you will likely grow out of it with age. What really did it for me was after college I moved away to a brand new part of the country on my own, and started fresh, and through engaging in activities that once made me anxious I built self confidence.
Also, talk to your doctor. I was like you and not really interested in meds, and expressed this to her, and she talked to me about them a little more. She told me how they worked, and I changed my mind. I was prescribed Xanax on an as-needed basis, and only took it for situations for which I knew I would be very uncomfortable. I got these meds in my mid 20's and wished I had gotten them from my Dr. sooner. I can take them, and be in the experience without the "weird" feeling, and this allowed me to engage more and be a part of the group. The thing is, the meds kind of seemed to "show me the way", in that I would use them in a particular situation for a while, and after having gone through the situation with the pill, I would eventually do it without the pill, and remember what it is like to not feel the anxiety, and it helped to become comfortable in situations without hte pill ultimately.
I'm 17 going on 18 in the fall, and I feel I have some type of anxiety disorder. I'm also leaving for college in the fall, so I know my parents would feel uneasy about taking me to a psychiatrist with the notion that something is "wrong." Is there any way to get over-the-counter medication to cure my anxiety? And if not, can I go on my own to a psychiatrist once I turn 18, or can it be earlier?
Please and thanks.
You need a prescription for anxiety medications. But you can get it from your general physician. Just say you want to go to the doctor. You don't have to see a psychiatrist. Your parents are going to know if you go to the doctor and use their insurance, so you might as well tell them.
