Is there any way to get medication for an assumed anxiety disorder without seeing a doctor?
ByI'm 17 going on 18 in the fall, and I feel I have some type of anxiety disorder. I'm also leaving for college in the fall, so I know my parents would feel uneasy about taking me to a psychiatrist with the notion that something is "wrong." Is there any way to get over-the-counter medication to cure my anxiety? And if not, can I go on my own to a psychiatrist once I turn 18, or can it be earlier?
Please and thanks.
You need a prescription for anxiety medications. But you can get it from your general physician. Just say you want to go to the doctor. You don't have to see a psychiatrist. Your parents are going to know if you go to the doctor and use their insurance, so you might as well tell them.

Under 18s can see a psychiatrist and often have mental problems.

You can go to a psychiatrist now. You might want to start with your family doctor for a reference; that doctor may even be able to prescribe for you so that you don't need to see a psychiatrist. If you see your family doctor, or before making an appointment with a psychiatrist, ask whether your parents can be told about what you are doing under the HIPAA privacy rules (that's pronounced "HIP-uh"). I did some web searching but couldn't find a specific rule addressing children under 18.
I urge you to get some help now, as the condition might worsen. Not saying it definitely will, but it's possible, especially with the stress of leaving home and going to college.

there is no over the country cure for anxiety unfortunately, and to be honest most people i have come across haven't really found the prescribed medication much help either. in my own experiences diet and lifestyle change along with good therapy are the best answer and are what helped me to get over my own anxiety problem. it is always a good idea to talk to your doctor or to your parents about these kinds of things, it's best not to deal with this kind of stuff on your own when there are people out there who will help and support you. if you'd like to know more about the kinds of things that can help with anxiety then take a look here: http://www.anxietyforum.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4087 but i would really urge you to speak to someone who can help you out xx

You can always try the herbal remedy. There is a sort of tea that you can make from kava powder. Kava powder comes from a root grown in the polynesian islands. Basically, the kavalactones in the kava block the anxious receptors in the brain. It doesn't taste very good though!
If you go to http://tasteofkava.com , you will be able to find more information on the subject.
