I recently got prescribed to zoloft and klonopin for my anxiety, I’ve decided not to even take the zoloft because I am not depressed and never have been, even though its FDA approved to help anxiety i do not want to be on antidepressants. I still believe I am a very mentally strong person and would make a great soldier, I want to follow my father and grandfathers footsteps and serve my country. Please no negative responses I dont need to hear peoples bullsh*t. Thank you.

The current guidelines for enlisting require that you be off of medication for one year with a doctors statement stating you are stable/functioning normally without them at this time.

I’ve been doing alot of research, and I think I may have Social Anxiety Disorder, or at least some form of it. I know there’s something more to it than me just being shy. Anyway, I don’t know who to approach. My regular doctor? Or a psychiatrist? I really just don’t know, and also does anyone know how they go about helping you deal with it/ overcoming it? Thanks for any help!

Social anxiety disorder is mostly a psychological problem so I would advise you to go to a psychologist. You can significantly reduce your social anxiety through a variety of interesting strategies without medications. Control Your Reaction to Fear - Overcoming these reactions is as simple as learning relaxation techniques such as yoga, meditation, and self hypnosis; Prepare Yourself Mentally - Rather than let your fear of embarrassment or humiliation overwhelm you in social settings, role play a few scenarios in advance to make sure you are well prepared for any challenging situations. If you are prepared for things that can go wrong and you know what to do and say in those awkward moments, you will have the confidence to keep calm and handle the situation well; Face Your Fears - Sometimes, our social fears does not stem from a lack of social skills, but rather from a sense of insecurity and a lack of esteem. By stepping outside your comfort zone and placing yourself in uncomfortable situations such as speaking in front of your peers or complimenting someone, and doing it repeatedly, the easier it becomes. Soon you will soon realize that there is actually nothing to fear from most people and you may even enjoy and laugh about it; Positive Visualization And Affirmation - The way you think strongly influences the way you feel. The realization that only you can control how you think, and how those thoughts control you, is an important step in overcoming social anxiety. When those thoughts, such as “I’m going to fail” or “they will make fun of me” begin making their way into your mind, challenge those negativity and replace them with more realistic, calmer thoughts. Tell yourself that you are capable, confident, and wonderful to combat those negative thoughts. Positive visualization and affirmation are helpful in motivating you along the road to curing yourself of this problem and improving your self worth. I really want help. I am 15 and I have always had underlying problems of social phobia and anxiety. It first started with school when I was very young, and I have found it difficult to keep friends and have never got rid of anxiety for school. I really want to get rid of this because it is messing up my life but I don’t want to let my parents know. They would not take me seriously. Can I get help with someone without anyone knowing?

It is soo hard growing up with SAD. Unfortunately the only way I could get treatment was to see a psychiatrist who prescribed me medicine. I am 23 years old now and have no signs of ever having Social Anxiety Disorder, are you sure you can’t go to your parents for help and support?

My husband is suffering from social anixety disorder and he does not want to take the medication for it because of the side effects. Is there anything I could do to make him feel better?

Medications can give temporary relief but prolong use can give various side effects. Hi there! I’m 20, a college student and have social anxiety disorder and it’s getting worse. I can barely buy a bottle of water without having my heart jumping out of my chest and shaking. I sometimes can’t look at my teacher cause I’m afraid of starting shaking and humiliate myself with a stupid answer etc. I’m gonna go to a psychologist tomorrow for the first time and my real question would be ‘How can this disorder be treatable?’. Can I cure myself or seriously need help? Thanks for answers.

I think it helps to keep in mind that you aren’t alone. A large percentage of the population has a hard time trying to get over social anxiety. That might not be very comforting, but remember people aren’t waiting for you to screw up, only you are. If you have a positive self image, it will become easier to talk to people.

I have suffered from anxiety and I keep getting the same medication over and over and my symptoms are not getting better by any means, For those who suffer from this what kind of medications help?

It depends on how bad your Anxiety disorder is. If you suffer daily, then you probably need something you take on a daily basis. Any one of the selective Seritonin Reuptake Inhibitors such as Zoloft. If you only have attacks once and a while then any one of the benzodiazepines like Ativan or Valium or Xanax will help.

I’ve had social anxiety disorder since I was about 7 years old (I’m 20 years old now) but the past year it’s gotten so bad that I don’t even leave the house because I don’t want to communicate with or be seen by anyone. I pretty much wake up (3pm) use computer till about 5pm, play xbox360 till dinner, then computer till about 5am.

What are some ways to help improve me being "normal"?

Go to church, esp ones that promote greeting its members. Attended their single Bible study, if it’s a big one, you will get over this. Don’t seclude yourself, that is the worse thing you can do. Surround yourself with people that like you or with people you think, will like you.
Start calling people up on the phone, use the yellow pages if you have too, go to meet up groups you might find on the web. Volunteer. Call churches and ask to be placed on their prayer list or ask for some counseling. I suggest a Baptist, or Evangelical, or Assemblies of God Church, Spirit filled Churches where God’s love is.
Don’t follow the world, their NOT NORMAL, (the world is a sick place!) you may have been right all along to stay to yourself under those circumstances!
Good luck to you, take care.
