Would it be beneficial to be tested Autism or Asperger's syndrome as an adult?
ByDuring a recent visit to my family physician, where I was helping fill out some disability paperwork, my doctor mentioned that maybe since I haven't made any progress being treated as having generalized anxiety and panic disorder over the past 15 years that maybe they had missed something. She then proceeded to tell me she has been thinking I might have some kind of autism.
We didn't go into it much. I left shortly after she brought it up. I don't like long visits.
I have looked up symptoms and I seem to have some of the them. A lot of people have these symptoms too though. I think they are just a little different.
I do have difficulty in social situations. I am naive, so I have been told. I tend to take things more literally than others. Interacting with people is very tiring for me. I like people it's just hard to read them. I don't like being in close proximity to other people. It feels uncomfortable.
I am not so good with eye contact. Especially with strangers.
I cannot tolerate loud high pitched tones like smoke alarms or metal scraping against metal. It is really unsettling for me.
I have trouble with controlling depression, anxiety and panic attacks. Emotions are overwhelming.
I feel I have the ability to empathize with others pretty well. I am also no "Rain Man" that is for sure. I can't even memorize the multiplication table. I understand the concept just can't memorize it (I have no problems doing mathematical equations with a calculator). So I don't have superior intelligence by any means.
I never thought of all of this as a disorder besides anxiety and depression.
Medication and psychotherapy have been no panacea for me.
I would really like to improve the anxiety, panic attacks and depression. I feel like I'm running out of options. I don't want to be a burden on my friends, family and society anymore.
I don't want to just go to another doctor to look for yet another label telling me I am defective, unless it points me in the direction of treatment that could really help make the days easier to cope with. Maybe be more at ease with everything.
Could it help at all to be tested for Autism or Asperger's Syndrome?
If I do have this what good would a diagnosis do? I have read that this is better treated at a young age. I may be too old.
I would like to be in control of my emotions and be able to go to school or hold down a job some day.
What could be the harm of being tested? You say you don't want another label. Is that the right attitude? What if you are just searching for who you really are. Are you defective or are you unique-ly you?
Autism and Asperger's are usually first diagnosed in childhood but i don't know that it matters when treatment begins, many people are misdiagnosed before finding their true and correct diagnosis, and optimal treatment may vary.
In fact there are more government benefits for the Autistic (education and employment for one) and many different national support groups, perhaps someday you could become a leader in the field and even do research (not related to math since you're no Rainman. lol) since you are so gifted in articulation and written communication.
Get tested. You can get a 4 year college degree while you're thinking about it all these things.

If you think you might have some form of autism, then I would find a doctor who specializes in autism–there, they will run various tests to determine whether or not you are autistic. They will probably run a test that measures the many areas of learning (memory, cognitive thinking, vocabulary skills, etc.) At least that's what they did for me when I was tested for autism at age 3. They will also probably test you on your social skills, as autism tends to manifest itself in this area–many autistic people have impaired social skills. In addition, they will also probably need a medical background check to help them in their diagnosis–including how many conditions you've been previously diagnosed with, etc. This will help the doctor in making his or her diagnosis.

You're looking for something wrong with yourself, which always gets you down, to explain some things you can't understand about yourself, things which makes you anxious. Instead, try thinking positively about these things that made you anxious and scare you… and you might not be able to do the whole multiplication table for a lot of reasons, but I doubt it's b/c you're not smart enough (so don't say that).
Also, I don't know you so I can't say for sure, but I'd say you are experiencing what a lot of people are discovering - there isn't always a cure, just a way of dealing with it.
What are you panicking and anxious about? I'm just wondering if you've really thought about getting rid of this automatic physical response and behavior - do you want to stop this? Have you worked with someone on this? Go back in your life to a time when you didn't do that- what is different? This can be worked on via behavioral training. But I think you have to be aware of what's going on, how out of control it's become, and make a promise to take back control of your life.
Finally, sometimes it's something deeper, more part of our personality, which is harder to change. Asperger's and Austism seem like deep disorders, almost seem like they take over the personality. And you might just have some personality traits you've acquired from your genes that make you more sensitive (like obsessive-compulsive, for example?) to sounds and lights. Headaches might also cause some of this sensitivity - do you have these?
It might help to be tested for these disorders you're thinking you might have. But be careful you're not going to someone who will jump to conclusions too soon, force drugs on you, tell you what you can and can't do with your life - you don't need to be diagnosed with yet another disorder… you just need to treat the symptoms. There are many reasons for your symptoms. Don't say to yourself - "oh I won't ever be able to go to school and work and do all these things", but it might just be that you need to think about an appropriate (and acceptable) career and social life for YOU.

I would get tested if I were you. My friend's husband and son have aspberger's. Her son is doing very well, by her husband was diagnosed late in life and has alot of problems. It's just how you deal with it, and other's in your life deal with it, I think. You're not too old at all, but it may be a long difficult journey for you. If you are willing to get help, it's there for you.
